The Sonderwunsch factory brought a dream to life with this one-off 911 Speedster
Since 1954, Porsche’s Speedster variants have symbolised open driving pleasure combined with distinctive driving dynamics, featuring a unique two-seat layout, distinctive cowl, and a shortened windshield. Despite this heritage, there was a notable absence of a Speedster model for the 911’s fourth generation, the Type 993.
Porsche produced Speedster variants for the G-Series and Type 964 but not for the Type 993, except for a couple of unique models and a factory restoration. Luca Trazzi, a Porsche enthusiast and designer, sought to fill this gap by creating a one-off 993 Speedster through Porsche’s Sonderwunsch program.
Moreover, Trazzi, who had long been captivated by the Speedster’s design and owned several Speedsters, decided to realise his vision of a 993 Speedster when he couldn’t find one that matched his dreams. His project, which took over three years, was based on a 1994 911 Carrera Cabriolet and made its debut at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering.
Trazzi’s inspiration stemmed from his early admiration for the Speedster. His design aimed to blend elements from past Speedster models while introducing modern touches. The project was a collaboration with Porsche’s Sonderwunsch team, showcasing their ability to create bespoke vehicles.
On top of that, Trazzi worked closely with the team, contributing detailed sketches and ideas throughout the process. The result was a car reflecting Trazzi’s vision, including unique design features like a rear cowl and custom yellow paint named ‘Otto Yellow’ after his dog. The project involved extensive customization, including a one-off rear lid design and distinctive black conical mirrors.
The Speedster featured 18-inch black Turbo design wheels with yellow pinstripes, and functional design elements like black stone chip protection. The interior combined black leather with yellow stitching, carbon fibre accents, and modern infotainment systems, blending classic aesthetics with contemporary technology.
The Speedster’s drivetrain also came from the 911 Carrera RS (Type 993), featuring a 3.8 litre engine producing around 300hp, enhancing its performance. This particular Speedster, unlike the two previously created 993 Speedsters, has a unique origin and design, differentiating it from its predecessors.
What’s more, the Sonderwunsch program, revived from the late 1970s, allows for highly personalised, one-off cars created in close collaboration with Porsche . It involves several stages, including customer consultation, design, and building phases, ensuring the car matches the customer’s vision and Porsche’s standards.
Luca Trazzi, born in 1962, is a renowned architect and designer known for his timeless and functional designs. His work reflects a commitment to simplicity and attention to detail, qualities that were evident in his custom Speedster project.
