Toyota GR86 Updated, Gets New Ridge Green Limited Edition Model

The Toyota GR86 has been given an update after 3 years of production.

It’s hard to believe but the Toyota GR86 in its current form has been around since 2021 and since 3 years has gone past, it’s time it got at least a minor update. The new “upgraded” GR86 arrives with sales in Japan beginning in August 2024. The biggest changes come in the form of enhanced performance, equipment upgrades, new colour choices and a limited edition model.

2024 Toyota GR86 update

Toyota GR86 Performance Enhancements

The primary enhancements to the car for 2024 include improved shock absorber damping characteristics, heightened electric power steering control, modified throttle characteristics (manual transmission only), expanded engine-speed tolerance range during downshifts (auto transmission only). More subjectively, Toyota says the new GR86 has a better sense of contact with the ground, a better steering response and is more linear.

The engine is still a naturally-aspirated 2.4L boxer four cylinder with port and direct injection producing 234 hp and 250Nm of torque. It can be paired to either a 6-speed conventional automatic or a 6-speed manual transmission.

Toyota GR86 Equipment Upgrades

Only two new pieces of equipment have been added to the GR86. They are new Daytime Running Lights and a new Tyre Pressure Warning System

Toyota GT86 Special Edition (Hakone Edition)

Only 200 units of the Ridge Green Limited model will be offered to customers in Japan and it looks as if US customers will get 860 units of their version of this called the Hakone Edition. This pairs the Ridge Green exterior paint option with Bronze painted wheels. Inside, the seats get perforated black ultrasuede with tan leather accents and tan stitching. Silver painted trim pieces are now black instead. There’s an embroidered panel by the shoulder area of the door pad.

Two performance enhancements have been made – the brakes are now Brembo ventilated discs while the shock absorbers are from Sachs (ZF). The red-painted Brembos are 4-piston front and 2-piston rear brake calipers on 12.8″ by 1.3″ front rotos and 12.4″ by 0.79″ rear rotors. Strangely enough, in the US these last two upgrades can be optioned in for any other grade of the GR86 as the Performance Package.
