At the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed, automotive enthusiasts were treated to an extraordinary debut as Red Bull Advanced Technologies unveiled their latest marvel, the RB17 hypercar. Engineered under the visionary direction of Adrian Newey, Chief Technical Officer of Oracle Red Bull Racing and a luminary in Formula One history, the RB17 represents the culmination of Newey’s ambition to create a hypercar from concept to reality.
“This project has been a magnificent journey,” Newey remarked, reflecting on the years of contemplation leading to the RB17’s unveiling. Akin to a two-seater F1 car, the RB17 encapsulates Red Bull’s ethos of power, speed, and aesthetic allure, designed not just for performance but also for the shared thrill of high-speed driving experiences.
Moreover, celebrating two decades of Formula One dominance with six Constructors’ Titles and seven Drivers’ Championships, Oracle Red Bull Racing marked the RB17’s reveal as a centrepiece of their anniversary festivities at Goodwood. Christian Horner, Team Principal, hailed the RB17 as “a future classic,” embodying the team’s commitment to pushing automotive boundaries.
Crafted with meticulous attention by Red Bull Advanced Technologies, the RB17 boasts a carbon fibre monocoque chassis and a mid-mounted, naturally aspirated V10 engine capable of reaching 15,000rpm. This powerhouse, coupled with a carbon-fibre gearbox, delivers over 1,200hp while weighing less than 900kg.
On top of that, its aerodynamics and downforce ratios rival those of aircraft, ensuring F1-equivalent performance on the track. Only 50 of these masterpieces will be produced, each offering not just performance but also exclusivity. Newey emphasised the deliberate decision to limit production, enabling the entire manufacturing process to be managed within Red Bull Advanced Technologies’ facilities, leveraging suppliers trusted by their F1 team.
Beyond its technological prowess, the RB17 is designed as a work of automotive art, both visually stunning and audibly captivating. Newey’s choice of a naturally aspirated engine was driven by a desire for a distinct racing soundtrack, reminiscent of the iconic V10 engines that defined Formula One until 2005.
In essence, the RB17 stands as a testament to Red Bull’s relentless pursuit of innovation and performance, bridging the worlds of motorsport and hypercar craftsmanship with unprecedented elegance and power. As it makes its mark on the global stage, the RB17 promises not only exhilarating driving experiences but also a lasting legacy in the annals of automotive history.
