A Chinese startup has created this new super fast charging EV battery with amazing range
Greater Bay Technology, a Chinese startup founded in 2020 by Huang Xiangdong and industry veteran Pei Feng, has unveiled a groundbreaking innovation in electric vehicle (EV) battery technology known as the Phoenix cell. This new battery, according to Bloomberg, addresses a persistent challenge faced by EVs, namely extreme weather conditions.
Traditional EV batteries struggle with efficiency as temperatures drop below freezing, impacting their charging capabilities and overall range. To combat this, carmakers have resorted to heat pumps, yet these methods remain inefficient. Greater Bay Technology claims to have revolutionised EV battery performance with their Phoenix cell.
Moreover, in just five minutes, the Phoenix cell can elevate its temperature from as low as -4 Fahrenheit (-20 degrees Celsius) to a comfortable 77 Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius), optimising it for rapid charging and maximum efficiency while also having amazing range.
Huang Xiangdong, drawing on his extensive automotive engineering background including a stint at Fiat’s research centre, envisioned the Phoenix cell to emulate the convenience of refuelling a petrol powered car.
Their first-generation battery already supports a quick 15 minute recharge time and delivers an impressive range of 310 miles (500km), currently powering GAC’s Aion electric SUV. Looking forward, Greater Bay Technology aims to roll out their next-generation Phoenix cell capable of achieving a staggering 621 miles (1,000km) on a single charge.
On top of that, Huang emphasises that the technology not only solves long charging times but also other problems associated with EV ownership, asserting that weather conditions will no longer affect the battery’s performance. With aspirations to boost EV adoption globally, Greater Bay Technology has swiftly earned unicorn status, valued at USD1 billion within 2 years.
The company’s rapid rise places it among the ranks of established battery giants like Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited (CATL) and BYD in China. Huang anticipates widespread deployment of the Phoenix cell by next year, starting with GAC’s Aion EVs and potentially expanding to other automakers’ EVs.
