Honda Malaysia celebrates the success of a legacy nameplate and a relatively new one too.
This week, Honda Malaysia celebrated the delivery of both their 170,000th Civic and 150,000th HR-V. To celebrate the occasion, they had a special car handover ceremony at the Honda Botanic Auto Mall. Both the 170,000th Civic and the 150,000th HR-V were top-spec e:HEV RS models.
Honda Malaysia Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Hironobu Yoshimura said, “We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to all customers for their unwavering support and trust in the Honda brand. Honda models continue to receive growing popularity and demand thanks to our customers’ support. Now in its 11th Generation, the Civic is an iconic Honda model and has maintained its position as the Non-National C-Segment leader for eight consecutive years since 2016. The HR-V meanwhile, has won the hearts of many Malaysians since its debut in Malaysia nine years ago and set a high benchmark in the Compact SUV Segment. With its exceptional design and advanced powertrain options, we believe the HR-V will continue to be Malaysian’s favourite Compact SUV. As we celebrate the delivery of the 170,000th Civic and 150,000th HR-V, we extend our sincere gratitude to both our customers for being part of Honda’s journey and helping us in achieving this significant milestone. Congratulations to both of our valued customers!”
According to JPJ’s data, the Honda CR-V should also be approaching its 150,000th registration in Malaysia, though that celebration may come later this year or next. The CR-V was the first locally-assembled vehicle by Honda Malaysia at their Pekan plant in 2003. There were quite a few 1st and 2nd generation CR-V sold here before Honda Malaysia set up shop officially.
During the handover ceremony both owners were presented with an exclusive gift and Honda Genuine Accessories worth RM10,000. Mr. Lim Chin Hui said, “As a fan of the Civic, the 11th Generation Civic embodies a sophisticated appearance while staying true to the sporty appeal inherent in the Civic DNA. The model features an advanced hybrid powertrain which is more practical for my daily commute. I am truly amazed by the powerful performance delivered by the powertrain.”
Ms. Asha Waheda, who purchased the 150,000th HR-V said, “Choosing the HR-V was an easy decision for me, having been captivated by its stylish design. Beyond its looks, the HR-V offers exceptional practicality and comfort for drivers and passengers alike, making this model the perfect fit for my lifestyle.”
Honda Malaysia 1H 2024 Sales Numbers
In the first half of 2024, Honda Malaysia has sold more than 39,200 vehicle, which represents a growth of 16% when compared to the same period in 2023. The biggest contributor to that number has been the HR-V which represents 28% of all of Honda Malaysia’s sales. Strangely, the more affordable Honda City takes a smaller contribution of sales at 24% though this COULD be because the City’s sales numbers are split between its sedan and hatchback nameplates. When combined, JPJ’s open data seems to indicate the City is marginally more popular than the HR-V so far in 2024.
It’s encouraging to see the acceptance of hybrid technology in Malaysia with 13% of Honda Malaysia’s sales consisting of e:HEV variants of the City, City Hatchback, Civic, HR-V and CR-V.
