The MG HS is a best-selling petrol and plug-in hybrid model and now has a new generation.
The MG HS has been one of the best selling models in the line-up in the UK and this week at the Goodwood Festival of Speed a new generation model has been unveiled. The all-new HS arrives once again with both petrol and plug-in hybrid powertrain options. This time around, new features, more cabin space, enhanced styling have all been part of the design brief.
The new MG HS comes with a longer wheelbase and a more sophisticated appearance. The cabin is more spacious and the exterior proportions have been changed and you get shorter overhangs, a rising shoulder line and a slim glasshouse. The new HS is wider, longer but slightly shorter. Even the wheelbase is longer too.
The front grille takes the MG design language first seen on the MG3 with slimmer headlights connected by a central black panel. Around back, the LED taillights are linked by a central motif with an X-shape for the light signature. The new full-spec MG HS Trophy has 19″ diamond cut alloy wheels, a powered tailgate and Vehicle-to-Load functionality.
5 colour options include White Pearl, Black Pearl, Sterling Silver Metallic, Hampstead Grey Metallic, and Dynamic Red Tri-coat.
Inside, the new MG HS has dual 12.3″ displays with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other features include a 360-degree surround view camera, powered driver seat with lumbar adjustment, 8-speaker audio system, a wireless smartphone charger, as well as light and dark themes, and 3 modes for the displays. You also get a new 3-spoke steering wheel, better switchgear, a new “shuttle-style” gear shifter. Bootspace has also been expanded to 507L, which is an increase of 44L. There are also additional cubby holes in the cabin. You get black leather-style upholstery on the HS Trophy with a tan colourway option.
The new petrol-powered MG HS SE 1.5T starts the model range off at just £24,995 while the top-of-the-line MG HS Trophy PHEV comes in at £33,995. This translates to about RM150,000 to RM205,000 before excise duties and import taxes and since it’s not a battery electric vehicle, it will be hit with those to a certain degree. We don’t think MG Malaysia will be interested in bringing in this new MG HS for now as they have a massive tax advantage on electric vehicles and the HS remains a petrol/PHEV model.
The PHEV model pairs a 142PS 1.5L petrol engine with a 154kW electric motor, enabling a 0-100km/h time of just 6.8 seconds. This set-up comes equipped with a 24.7kWh battery and a 67kW generator to enable pure electric driving for up to 120km. The pure petrol model comes with with a turbocharged 1.5L putting out 169PS and 275Nm of torque. This car goes from 0-100km/h in 9.4 seconds. What’s interesting is that it comes with a 6-speed manual as standard but can be upgraded to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic.
