Will Malaysia finally enforce lemon law to protect car buyers here?
The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) organised the Malaysian Consumer Symposium 2024 with the theme of legislation related to the Lemon Law and while this is just an early draft for now, it is indeed the first step towards the country actually enforcing this law here. Here is what you need to know about it.
Moreover, the symposium focused the introduction of the Lemon Law and in Malaysia, the legal provisions known as ‘Lemon Law’ related to the consumer’s right to compensation against suppliers and manufacturers for goods that do not comply with the guarantee are enshrined in the Consumer Protection Act 1999 [Act 599] under the control of the KPDN.
Apart from Act 599, some other legislation such as the Contract Act 1950, the Sale of Goods Act 1957 and the Bali Rent Act 1967 also have legal provisions that have a ‘Lemon Law’ component. This effort is part of an initiative to implement legal reform to create a more comprehensive consumer protection legal framework in line with current demands.
