Jaguar Land Rover owned by India’s Tata Motors, is set to commence the production of its iconic Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models in Pune India
News just in that Jaguar Land Rover will shift production of its best selling models to the home country of its owner. This marks the first time in the 54-year history of these models that they will be manufactured outside of the UK. Yes, in case you didn’t know this, this iconic British car brand is 100 percent Indian owned.
Ironic right? The British once conquered India and now India has conquered the most iconic British car brand.
Meanwhile, previously, both models were exclusively produced at Jaguar Land Rover’s Solihull plant in the UK and exported to around 121 markets worldwide, including India and Malaysia.
According to a PTI report, by increasing localization, the renowned British brand aims to improve the pricing of the two models to appeal to a broader customer base in India and ASEAN countries.
This move will result in an 18-22 percent price reduction, with the Range Rover selling price moving closer to German rivals
India imposes a 15 percent duty on completely knocked-down kits and over 100 percent on imported models.
Presenting quarterly and annual results, N Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons also vindicated the market in India and appreciated Ratan Tata for the JLR acquisition in 2008.
The local assembly represents a major achievement for JLR India that targets at achieving twice the current sales within two to three years. All the Range Rover models from the Sport, Velar, and Evoque are manufactured in India for domestic consumption to supplement Solihull, UK production line.
Currently, JLR intends to introduce at least six new car models to cater to the rising population in India consisting of two internal combustion engine vehicle models and four electric vehicles.
JLR India had record sales of 4,436 vehicles in 2023 which was a significant increase of 81 percent from the 2022 sales. The market for luxury cars in India is also expected to grow further based on a stable economy and a higher population of individuals owning luxury cars.
The plant in Pune has been assembling the Land Rover Freelander since 2011.
