Maybe Proton should name a car after its donor car for the first time.
When it comes to using donor cars from multiple brands, few brands have mastered the art quite like Proton. They’ve had plenty of “engineering help” from Mitsubishi, Renault, Citroen, Suzuki and even Honda before settling with new long-time partner Geely. Now as the brand prepares to embark on its journey into electric mobility, they’ve more or less confirmed that their first battery electric vehicle will be based on the Geely Galaxy E5, which was revealed earlier this month amidst the chaos of the Beijing Auto Show.
While it’s all but certain that the first Proton EV will be a Geely, they’re probably going to call it something other than Galaxy E5. In fact, it’s possible they’ll park it under an all-new sub-brand. That’s kind of what we’re picking up from a contest that was launched by the company last week.
The “Proton EV Brand Naming Contest” invites Malaysians to decode and guess the brand name of their latest EV. Unlike naming contests by Proton of the past, this one doesn’t invite Malaysians to name the car or vote on a name but rather to just guess what they’ve already decided the car is going to be called.
Why Should You Participate In The Proton EV Brand Naming Contest?
Money.
There’s RM5,000 to win if you’re the grand prize winner and RM1,500 for the 1st runner up and RM1,000 for the 2nd runner up. There will also be Top 5 entries winning RM100 each… The real question is how do you place 1st, 2nd and 3rd in a contest where there is only 1 correct answer? Will the podium places be awarded to three contestants who all guessed the right name but submitted the answers at different times? Perhaps you’ll get points for guessing the right letters with bonus points if you guess them in the right places. Our guess for the contest mechanic is that the Grand Prize will be awarded to the first person to guess the right name, with everything else being a subjective judgement as to the creativity of the guessed name.
To be honest, the Proton name begs for an EV sub-brand called Electron. Don’t copy our answer. Try PrEVe or EVra (like e-Wira but worse). The link to the contest and instructions can be found below.
