The BAIC Beijing BJ30 might come to Malaysia if the BJ40 does well here.
A couple of weeks ago, BAIC arrived in Malaysia, bringing in the Beijing BJ40 Plus off-road SUV as one of their first entries into our market. While the BJ40 had some Jeep Wrangler vibes to it, this new BJ30 looks to get its inspiration from the latest Ford Bronco Sport.
The BAIC Beijing BJ30 is a mid-sized SUV that still features off-roader styling and real off-roader capabilities thanks to its 215mm ground clearance, 25-degree approach angle and 30-degree departure angle. The BJ30 is 4730mm long, 1910mm wide, 1790mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2820mm. ICE and hybrid powertrains are planned but no specifications have been shared yet.
The interior is spacious and functional and in fact BAIC says this off-roader was designed cabin first to ensure user experience scenarios met customer needs. As such with the rear seats folded down and the trunk door closed, two 1.8m tall adults can lie down side by side. The trunk’s storage shelf can be transformed into a small table when camping, a little bit like how the first Honda CR-V featured a hidden deployable table under the trunk.
The instrument panel is inspired by a snowboard and you can see that with its upturned ends and metallic stripes. There’s a 14.6″ screen dominating the centre and this controls most of the vehicle’s functions via a simple user interface with playful graphics.
The exterior of the BJ30 is tough and distinctive while retaining a modern minimalist aesthetic. There’s a floating L shaped roof to visually shorten the cabin size while paying homage to the BJ40’s removable roof. What’s missing here is the external spare tyre as this is a family-oriented product and a powered tailgate takes priority. Up front the full LED signature headlights come with 3 types of greeting animations.
The Beijing BJ30 is available in six colours including Forest Green and Matt Gray as well as Fog Grey which features technology developed in collaboration with BASF.
