It looks like this hybrid 911 is the first step towards an EV Porsche 911 coupe
Porsche is set to unveil the new 911 on 28 May 2024. While the exterior won’t see radical changes, the automaker has confirmed a significant transformation beneath the surface, the introduction of a hybrid powertrain.
Although it was anticipated that an electrically-boosted 911 was on the horizon, Porsche’s teaser for the 2025 model year 911 indicates that hybrid assistance will be integrated into the standard Carreras, rather than introduced as a separate model. This approach underscores Porsche’s commitment to evolving its classic design while embracing cutting-edge technology.
Moreover, details about the powertrain’s technical specifications remain sparse. However, Porsche has clarified that this will not be a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). The automaker describes it as a “performance hybrid,” emphasising its role in enhancing the car’s dynamic capabilities.
The new hybrid 911 has demonstrated its prowess by lapping Germany’s Nürburgring in an impressive 7 minutes, 16.9 seconds, a whole 8.7 seconds faster than the equivalent version of the previous model, the 992 Carrera S. The lap times were achieved with a 992.2 equipped with standard road tires and the optional Aerokit, a package that includes a prominent fixed rear wing.
On top of that, spy photos have captured cars testing with and without this aero upgrade, which also appears to feature vertical vanes in the front bumper, possibly active air flaps. Interestingly, both variants seen in the images (one with and one without the fixed rear wing) share the same front bumper design.
Jörg Bergmeister, Porsche test driver and brand ambassador, praised the latest version of the iconic sports car, saying, “We have more grip, significantly more power, and the spontaneous response of the performance hybrid is a great advantage.” he remarked, highlighting the enhanced driving experience offered by the new hybrid system.
The introduction of a hybrid powertrain in the 911 marks a significant milestone in Porsche’s history, blending traditional performance with modern innovation. This move not only aims to boost the car’s dynamic capabilities but also aligns with the industry’s shift towards more sustainable technologies.
As Porsche continues to innovate, the new hybrid Porsche 911 stands as a testament to the brand’s dedication to performance, efficiency, and the future of automotive excellence.
