The iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class takes a step into the future with mild hybrid powertrain tech.
Ever since the G-Class was launched to the public in 1979 it has stood as the definitive off-roader… at least from Germany. It was one of the few passenger vehicles to come with three mechanical differential locks, a low range off-road reduction gear, a rigid rear axle and independent front suspension. Over the decades, Mercedes-Benz has sold over 400,000 of these models and it has been updated thoroughly, getting a full on new generation platform in 2018.
Now, as an electric variant looms on the horizon, Mercedes-Benz has decided to give the entire G-Class range a set of mild hybrid engines. These mild hybrid powertrains come with an integrated starter-generator (ISG) and a 48V on board electrical system. This helps to increase performance and reduce fuel consumption and emissions. With the electrification comes downsizing though.
The G500 ditches its 4.0L V8 engine in favour of a 3.0L inline 6. This motor is turbocharged (exhaust gas turbocharger + electric auxiliary compressor) and produces 449 hp and 560 Nm of torque with an additional 20 hp and 200 Nm of torque being delivered in small doses by the ISG when needed. There’s also an inline 6 turbo diesel engine on offer in the G450d model and this has 367 hp and 750 Nm of torque on tap with the same ISG boost.
Thankfully, the AMG G63 model still retains its twin-turbocharged 4.0L V8 petrol engine with 577 hp and 850 Nm of torque plus the ISG assist.
This model can also be fitted with a new AMG Active Ride Control option which adds hydraulic roll stabilization and adjustable adapative damping. 0-100km/h takes just over 4 seconds.
Besides that the new G-Class comes with the Transparent Bonnet feature first seen on Land Rover models before trickling down the Mercedes-Benz SUV models of this generation. The latest MBUX infotainment system is present here as well on the dual 12.3″ displays. There are also new safety and assistance systems to support drivers.
The design has also seen a very minor revision. The new radiator grille features four instead of three horizontal louvres. Front and rear bumpers have been refreshed. The A-pillar cladding is new, there’s a new spoiler lip on the roof edge and new insulation materials to improve aerodynamics and acoustic quality. There’s also a new Manufaktur Hyper Blue Magno paint option too for those looking for additional customization.
