First-Ever Mazda CX-80 Crossover SUV Unveiled In Europe, Malaysian Launch Soon?

Will Mazda even bother bringing in the CX-80 SUV here or is that wishful thinking?

Mazda Motor Europe has officially introduced the Mazda CX-80, its inaugural crossover SUV, on 18 April 2024. Pre-sales will commence in May, with sales slated for fall 2024. The CX-80, the fourth addition to the brand’s Large Product Group, embodies its human-centric philosophy while excelling in environmental and safety performance.

It marks Mazda’s debut of a three-row SUV in Europe, serving as the flagship model there. So now, we ask the age old question, will the CX-80 be sold here in Malaysia or perhaps even renamed then sold here? Well, considering how the brand already has the CX-9 which is also a 3-row family SUV, this makes little sense so it seems unlikely.

Moreover, with a focus on driving pleasure and environmental responsibility, the Mazda CX-80 boasts two hybrid powertrain options, expanding the brand’s market presence. Termed the “Graceful Driving SUV,” it blends commanding presence with Jinba-ittai driving experience, meeting rigorous safety standards while enhancing passenger enjoyment.

Essentially, it would only cannibalise (if you can even call it that) the sales of the aforementioned CX-9 SUV here and so bringing in a car like that, even if it does offer a cheaper alternative to the CX-9, the money required to bring the Mazda CX-80 here considering the tax structure in the country is simply not worth it at all.

On top of that, embracing the design ethos of “Graceful Toughness,” the Mazda CX-80 combines SUV ruggedness with elegant aesthetics. Its spacious cabin also accommodates various seating configurations, including captain seats and a versatile bench, ensuring comfort and flexibility for passengers and cargo alike.

European buyers can also choose between two electrified powertrains, the ‘e-SKYACTIV PHEV,’ a plug-in hybrid, and the ‘e-SKYACTIV D,’ a diesel hybrid with M Hybrid Boost. Both prioritise driving enjoyment alongside environmental sustainability. Perhaps a fully electric version may even be on the way soon as well.

As Mazda’s most expensive offering in Europe, the CX-80 prioritises passenger safety and driving satisfaction. Equipped with innovative features like “Cruising & Traffic Support,” just like the CX-9 and it also enhances driver awareness and intervenes in emergencies, underscoring the brand’s commitment to safety and driving pleasure.

Mazda remains dedicated to its Human Centric values, striving to enrich customers’ lives with the ‘Joy of Driving’ and the ‘Joy of Living.’
