Driving To Singapore? QR Codes At Checkpoints Promise Faster Immigration Clearance

The Singapore Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) rolls out a new QR Code system to save time.

As someone who spent his first two decades in Johor Bahru, I can tell you that nothing wastes time like the traffic jam heading into Singapore, especially when there’s an accident or stopped car on the causeway. Very soon things might improve drastically thanks to a new QR code system being implemented by the Singapore Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA). If you’re a frequent traveller to or from Singapore via Woodlands or Tuas, then read on for the big change that’s coming to your lifestyle starting 19 March 2024.

Here’s all you need to know about this time-saving initiative:

What You Need:

To take advantage of this seamless clearance process, travellers must download the MyICA mobile application on iOS or Android. Whether you’re travelling solo or with a group, simply input passport details into the app to generate a QR code. Each QR code can accommodate details of up to 10 travellers, making it convenient for families or group travellers. Singapore residents can even auto-populate their passport details via Singpass for added convenience.

How to Generate a QR Code:

Generating a QR code is a breeze with the MyICA app. Simply input passport details manually or use the built-in camera function to scan the machine-readable zone of your passport biodata page. Even first-time visitors or those with new passports can utilize this feature after the initial physical presentation.

The Clearance Process:

Upon arrival at the Woodlands or Tuas checkpoints, travellers can scan their QR codes at dedicated counters. ICA officers will conduct face-to-face checks using the data retrieved through the QR code. It’s crucial to ensure that the QR code matches the details and number of travellers in the vehicle to avoid rejection.

The introduction of QR codes promises to reduce overall waiting times by over 30% while also making contactless passport clearance a possibility.
