Huawei eyes auto segment after doing really well in smartphone segment
Chinese telecoms equipment giant Huawei Technologies continued to strengthen its focus on new auto technology with the establishment of a new company encompassing its autonomous driving and connected technology operations, according to recent reports citing data from a business registry.
The new company, Shenzhen Yinwang Intelligent Technology, was established last month with a registered capital of CNY1bn (USD140m) and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Huawei Technologies.
Registration data shows the business is licensed to operate in AI software development, smart car equipment manufacturing and systems integration services and among other areas.
Huawei plans to leverage its in house artificial intelligence (AI) and telecom technologies to play a key role in the next generation smart car industry.
Meanwhile, according to a filing made to the Shenzhen stock exchange by Chongqing Changan Automobile Co, Huawei would set up the firm, which would focus on digital platforms inside the car and other automotive systems and components.
Changan plans to take a stake of up to 40 percent in the business, which it hopes to help further its goals of becoming a low-carbon, tech-driven transportation company, it said in the filing.
PRESS RELEASE: Autonomous vehicles will produce broad social benefits:
Connectivity: Autonomous smart cars will give passengers more connectivity while on the move. People will be able to stay in touch with family, kids, and friends.
Safety: Each year, human error causes traffic accidents that kill 1.3 million people worldwide. Fully autonomous vehicles could reduce traffic fatalities by 94%.
Sustainability: By running more efficiently, autonomous vehicles will emit far fewer carbon than current cars. As much as 60% less.
Smart, self-driving cars will lead to the emergence of the “third space:” not quite like being at home and yet nearly as homey. The third space will lead to fundamental changes in how we use our time daily. The full benefits of this seismic shift are not yet fully visible.
Huawei provides smart components and systems for autonomous vehicles, helping manufacturers produce cars that are better, safer, and cleaner.
