Is This Ford Ranger Platinum Still A Workhorse Truck Or Not?
Launched in November 2023, this new PREMIUM Ranger which carries the name ‘Platinum’ looks different because it has been given an urban look and added premium trim found in passenger cars and SUV’s.
So, the premium appointments within the cabin of the Ranger Platinum start with a Bang & Olufsen Premium Audio System, a 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster, 12-inch central infotainment screen with the latest SYNC 4A, a Qi wireless charging pad and interior ambient lighting.
Interestingly, this top-tier pickup truck is also equipped with active driver assist systems that brings with it adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and lane centering, lane change warning, blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alert, evasive steer assist, and the Active Park Assist 2.0.
Ford has also added new ‘Roof Rails’, a powered rear cargo cover (yes it opens and closes with just a touch of a button) and the Platinum gets 20-inch wheels and special decals.
All this ‘extras’ do make a difference to those attracted by the same macho thing that has attracted many urban cowboys to pickup trucks in the past few years. Inside there’s also a distinctly a car like feel and this version comes with a finish and fit with added luxury.
On The Drive
The driving position still remains good with great view out front and side and the Ranger Platinum sits high because of all the 4WD engineering under the cabin floor. A quick turn of the knob next to the gear lever selects all drive options 2H, 4H and 4L, which is a neat and easy system, which makes the hassle of 4×4 driving very convenient.
Meanwhile, this Ranger Platinum is only available exclusively in double cab specification, and is powered by Ford’s 2.0L twin-turbocharged four-cylinder diesel that outputs 210 PS and 500 Nm of torque. Said power is then delivered to all-four wheels through a 10-speed automatic transmission with e-shift and a part-time four-wheel drive system.
On the road, the Ranger is easy to drive and even more reassuring it offers a solid presence, reasonably refined impressive power, a well-cushioned ride and surprising agility.
The engine delivers a surplus grunt or top-end power that is not always associated with even most diesel engines while still being tuned for extreme frugal usage of diesel fuel even when pushed.
Shifts from the 10-speed automatic are slick and timely. A supple ride is sometimes at the expense of handling balance, especially over imperfect surfaces, but this Ranger can be hustled along briskly with the steering responding faithfully and eagerly both on tarmac and dirt tracks. Inevitably it is the ride comfort that endears the Ranger to recreational buyers, although a stint on the 4×4 trail also tells you that it is as simple to maneuver over obstacles as it is to park in a city lot.
You Decide
For a family man who is a city dweller or a company accountant looking to purchase a fleet of workhorses that will deliver, this Ranger Platinum with good safety features and car like cabin features should be taken into account with a Ford showroom visit and a detailed test drive.
Prices for the Ranger Platinum starts from RM183,888 in Peninsular Malaysia and RM189,688 (on-the-road without insurance) over in East Malaysia. Its after-sales package includes a five-year/160,000 km manufacturer’s warranty, though Ford will also be more than happy to sell buyers an extended six-year or seven-year or up to 40,000km coverage with the Premium Care extended warranty package (EWP) and Extended Service Plan (ESP).
