GWM Malaysia says the Ora 07 and GWM Tank 300 are both on Malaysian soil already.
Great Wall Motor (GWM) may be one of the largest Chinese vehicle exporters, but the company is still struggling to make inroads in our market. The Ora Good Cat launched before the BYD Atto 3 and became the first Chinese EV to be sold in Malaysia tax-free. Unfortunately uptake has not been very promising. That may soon change with the arrival of more appealing products.
GWM Malaysia confirmed today that two new models have arrived on Malaysian soil – the Ora 07 and the Tank 300.
Ora 07
The Ora 07 is a more masculine and slightly larger and more upmarket electric vehicle than the Good Cat. It is known in some markets as the Lightning Cat, but Ora seems to be moving away from their feline nomenclature in favour of a more generic numerical naming scheme.
The Ora 07 will be GWM Malaysia’s real test on the EV front. The Good Cat’s lukewarm reception in Malaysia could be down to a number of factors – the unfamiliarity of the brand here, the market’s hesitance to adopt EVs, the femininity of the Good Cat’s name, design and colour choices.
The 07 doesn’t have these excuses, but now comes up against a more competitive market with alternatives like the Model 3, Dolphin, and Atto 3 established and the Seal soon to be available. That being said, it does have some Porsche-esque design cues to it.
Tank 300
The Tank 300 will be quite an exciting entry. It’s well-received in Australia and provides an alternative to the ultra-expensive Land Cruiser type products that aren’t even available brand new in Malaysia. Sure there are plenty of mid-sized SUVs on offer in Malaysia, but there are few SUVs here that emulate the looks of an off-roader while still retaining the relative ease of use and creature comforts of a modern passenger car. The only models I can think of are the Suzuki Jimny, which is a tad too small, or at the high end, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Land Rover Defender which are too expensive for the average consumer. The Tank 300 bridges this gap and as long as it’s priced at or around RM200,000-250,000, is sure to find some buyers.
Ora Good Cat With New Colour Option
Besides the two new models, GWM Malaysia also says that the Good Cat will in the new Pistachio Green is now available. This shade of green was already launched in Malaysia back in May 2023, so it could just be that stocks of that colour have only just arrived on our shores.
