The Volkswagen Golf family gets minor styling changes, more power and some physical buttons back
The Volkswagen Golf turns 50 this year and what better way than to celebrate with a facelift? The new 2024 Volkswagen Golf family carries a lot of weight on its back with 37 million units sold worldwide. The new model may just be a facelift, but Volkswagen has thrown some engineering and tech muscle into the new product to make it the best Golf in half a century, plus possibly the last one to have an ICE option.
New Golf Family
The Volkswagen Golf family will consist of some familiar faces, such as the basic Golf in various trim levels up to R-Line, Golf GTI and Golf R. In other markets, there will be more options of course but these are the ones that Malaysians have experienced first hand.
TSI turbocharged petrol engines will still be available, but eTSI mild hybrid systems and eHybrid plug-in hybrid electric systems are being offered too. For the GTI, the European market sees an increase in power of 20hp to 261hp but the manual gearbox is now eliminated.
Lighting And Tech
All Golf family vehicles will come with a new generation infotainment system as well as new illuminated controls for the auto climate control. This new MIB4 system features a screen divided into two touch bars. Volkswagen says the top bar is configurable while the bottom bar remains static with A/C controls and the home button no matter what happens with the large main screen area in the middle. The display is either a 10.4″ model or a 12.9″ model depending on spec.
A standard 10.2″ Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster is featured on all Golf models now. Physical buttons on the steering return to control this system and there are different display modes to suite individual tastes.
Outside, new LED headlights and LED tail lights come too including optional IQ.Light LED matrix headlights and 3D LED taillight clusters with animation effects.
In Europe, the VW badge in front will be available with illumination for the first time.
Colours And Options
You’ll also find new rim designs going up to 19″ across. Four new paint options arrive for the Golf family:
- Crystal Ice Blue Metallic
- Anemone Blue Metallic
- Oyster Silver Metallic
- Grenadilla Black Metallic
A black painted roof is optional on the R-Line, GTE and GTI models.
