Being the definitive hot hatch, will an electric Volkswagen Golf GTI work?
There are many sub cultures within car culture, while some are a bit more niche, especially in some markets, some are universally popular. The hot hatch culture is one of the latter options and, by far, one of the most popular hot hatchbacks is the Volkswagen Golf GTI. Well, this may change soon.
Okay, so remember a while ago when we wrote about how Volkswagen would do away with the manual transmission on its Golf models by next year? Here is the link to that, in case you missed it. Well, now it seems that the legendary hot hatch is about to lose its internal combustion engine (ICE) powertrain as well.
Moreover, we have already covered how the German automaker, Volkswagen, had put out a trademark for the new Golf GTI model (link here) which seemed to hint that the hot hatch would be going fully electric soon. Now those rumours have been all but confirmed and we even have a timeline for this as well.
Yes, all signs point to the legendary Volkswagen Golf GTI going all electric for 2026. This is inevitable given the stance that the Volkswagen top brass have taken on electric vehicles (EVs) and emissions laws in Europe so the only real question left now is, are the fanboys of the hot hatch into the idea of an electric Golf GTI?
Personally, I will not speak on behalf of all the Volkswagen Golf GTI fans as I myself am more of a sedan/coupe enthusiast and generally don’t care much for hatchbacks anyway but I assume they would prefer Volkswagen keep the legendary hot hatch petrol-powered for as long as possible and I do as well.
On top of that, we have also already covered how Volkswagen had managed to finally outsell Tesla in the EV segment in Germany recently, the link to that is here for your reading pleasure. So will the German automaker capitalise on this and push even more for EV development? It seems likely.
I personally would have preferred it if the brand had come up with a new vehicle all together instead of taking a legendary nameplate like the Golf GTI and just electrifying it. I find it lazy and unoriginal, but then again, that is just my own biased take as an old school petrolhead. What do you guys think?
Well, one thing remains clear, at the rate things are going, the scam that is EVs will sooner or later be exposed and a lot of people (Not Toyota since they are the only ones pushing for the truth, in my opinion) are going to have to eat their words.
