This Isuzu Truck Is Running On Honda Hydrogen Fuel Cell

Two Japanese auto giants, Isuzu and Honda showcase their joint hydrogen fuel cell truck project.

While the carbon-neutral future of passenger cars seems to be set in stone with battery electric vehicles, there is still room for innovation on the commercial front. There are many companies out there who still believe the hydrogen fuel cell technology offers the cleanest way forward… including both Honda and Isuzu and now they’re teaming up to show the world what’s possible.

Isuzu Motors Limited and Honda Motor Co., Ltd. have unveiled the GIGA FUEL CELL heavy-duty truck. This innovative venture underscores their shared commitment to sustainable and efficient heavy-duty transportation, leveraging their combined expertise for environmental responsibility.

The companies have embarked on a comprehensive demonstration testing phase on public roads in Japan to showcase the truck’s capabilities and address crucial aspects. The primary goal is to collect valuable data, gain insights, and overcome technical challenges, ultimately preparing for a planned market introduction in 2027.

The demonstration, scheduled from December 2023 to September 2024 in the Kanto area (covering Tochigi, Saitama, Tokyo, and Kanagawa prefectures), involves Isuzu Logistics and Honda Logistics as responsible entities, utilizing a single test vehicle.

Key areas of focus during this testing phase include assessing the practicality of the heavy-duty FC truck in cargo handling and real-world driving scenarios. Emphasis is placed on its adaptability to commercial operations, ensuring it meets the demands of the industry.

Additionally, the demonstration scrutinizes the logistics of operating a fuel cell-powered heavy-duty truck. This involves a meticulous evaluation of hydrogen refueling processes, aiming for seamless and efficient operations to support the truck’s viability.

The market compatibility of the GIGA FUEL CELL is also a key aspect under scrutiny. By analyzing its alignment with existing market demands, the companies aim to identify features that resonate with industry needs, paving the way for a successful market integration in 2027.
