Perodua confirms it has planned an affordable EV slated to release in 2025
Okay, so by now, we all would have heard the rumours that our second National carmaker, Perodua, has been planning an affordable electric vehicle (EV) to be added to their lineup soon. Well, now the brand has actually confirmed this and even given a timeline as to when to expect it. Are you excited? Let’s review what we know so far.
So the Perodua EV project, in line with the brand’s appointment to spearhead affordable EV production under NIMP2030, has seen the hometown brand partnered with an international automotive company to produce the EV prototype. An international company from Italy, no less.
Moreover, a massive production by Perodua is scheduled for the end of 2025. So clearly, a big thank you is in order as the company is helping Malaysia in advancing EV technology and strengthening Malaysia’s sustainable mobility by undertaking this project. I still remain skeptical of EVs in general but I am glad Perodua is doing this.
As we can see in the pictures, not only is Perodua present at the talks with the Italian company to build this EV prototype, but also MITI Minister, YB Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz. This shows us that the Government is fully backing Perodua in this endeavour.
With the Government pushing all sorts of incentives and also trying to improve the charging infrastructure for EVs in Malaysia, (though we are still many years away from charging infrastructure in the country being viable for every Malaysian to own an EV), our second national carmaker is definitely setting itself up for success.
On top of that, with Perodua throwing its hat into the EV ring, it finally means we will be able to have an EV that costs well under RM100,000. Since there are laws that prohibit imported EVs from being priced under this price, a local EV might finally be an option for the average Malaysian. Hopefully it won’t cost much more than a Myvi.
This may be slightly unrealistic to wish for but as the kids say these days, “delulu is the solulu,” for everyone older than 14 this basically means “delusion is the solution,” so let’s hope that whatever EV the brand releases after 2025, it is similar in price and maybe even dimensions with the popular Perodua Myvi.
What do you guys think? Are you excited to see what kind of EV Perodua will give us? How much do you think it will cost?
