Proton Exora MPV Production Finally Ended After 14 Years

The Proton Exora was first launched in April 2009 and it was developed under the codename P6-20A and named via a … messy, public competition. Now after 14 long years, this MPV is finally being retired after a whopping 196,583 units have been made, more than enough to take the C-segment MPV sales crown in Malaysia.

Moreover, the Proton Exora has gone through countless updates and alterations through its lifetime. The cheapest variant, the Standard MT from 2015, was RM56,888 and it topped out at RM88,998 for the six-seater Exora Prime in 2011. After minor facelifts and 3 different sets of Proton logos, the 2023 Proton Exora is priced between RM62,800 and RM69,800.

Initially launched with the hated naturally-aspirated CamPro CPS engine, the Proton Exora became the very first Proton to feature a turbocharged engine with the CamPro Charged Fuel Efficiency (CFE) engine introduced in the Exora Bold in 2011, which coincidentally, also saw its production curtain call last week.

On top of that, customers endured a love/hate relationship with the turbocharged engine, especially with its extreme fuel consumption and seemingly never-ending oil cooler hose (OCH) issues. I would know, A personal friend owns one and never stops complaining about these very same issues.

On the other hand, the Proton Exora was awarded a four-star Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) crash safety rating in 2013. Widely regarded as a far more stringent test than the local ASEAN NCAP, the result was certainly impressive for its time but expected for a family MPV.

The Proton Exora also spawned Proton’s Range Extender Electric prototype in 2010, while its platform was used to underpin 2010’s Lekiu SUV Concept and the Pick-up Concept in 2015. The year 2019 even saw an autonomous-driving Exora being showcased in Putrajaya. Not bad for an ageing Malaysian made MPV.

Now, the Proton Exora is truly living up to its multi-purpose moniker, being used as a mobile EV charging van by Gentari. At this point, none can deny that the Proton Exora has had a long and fruitful run full of great memories and moments we want to forget but seeing it go, we bid it farewell with a tear in our eyes.
