Electric Mazda MX-5 Concept Might Be Shown At Japan Mobility Show 2023

A Mazda MX-5 EV Concept might be on the cards at this month’s Japan Mobility Show.

The long-rumoured electric Miata may finally be shown in concept guise at this month’s Japan Mobility Show. The Hiroshima-based car company today announced its planned lineup of models for the exhibition at Tokyo Big Sight with the theme of “The future created by the ‘love of cars'”.

A Focus On The Mazda MX-5

This year’s exhibition will be centred around the iconic MX-5 roadster, probably the most recognizable and iconic Mazda model of the last 3 decades. The Mazda Stand will feature a first-generation MX-5, a two-thirds scale MX-5 model rigged up to a simulator will also be on display to give children the experience of driving the roadster.

Mazda will also display the latest iteration of the MX-5 fourth-generation model, which was just given its biggest upgrade ever. There will also be a conceptual MX-5 SeDV, “Self-empowerment Driving Vehicle”, a mysterious new experimental car that can only be controlled using the driver’s hands.

This concept car might just end up being a preview of the upcoming all-electric 5th generation MX-5 that has been rumoured. So far, the closest we’ve come to’ seeing it is via the ‘Vision Study Concept’ – a purely virtual creation shown in late 2022 alongside the company’s EV transition framework.

The fourth-generation MX-5 was put into production in 2015, meaning it is just over 8 years old now. For context, the longest-running MX-5 was the third-generation model at 10 years, followed by the first-generation at 9 years and the second-generation model at 8 years. With this in mind, it wouldn’t be out of the norm for Mazda to at least show a concept model of the fifth-generation MX-5 at this point.

Besides The MX-5 Concept, Mazda will also participate in other show programs including the motorsport area, where the latest Mazda2 Bio Concept will be shown, fueled by the next-generation of bio diesel.
