The Audi R8 may be at the end of the line, but it will be going out with a bang
So we all know that the Audi R8 is reaching the end of its finish line soon and this is indeed sad news for enthusiasts as we will likely never hear the roar of the car’s Lamborghini-sourced V10 but the German automaker behind this beast assures us that they have “something special” in store for us regarding this car.
Audi made these bold claims of having “something special planned” for the R8 on Instagram. According to the automaker, “It’s the R8’s Last Lap.” The debut of whatever the brand is teasing is on 12 September 2023 at 9:00 AM Eastern Standard Time and everyone is speculating about what it might be.
Moreover, the image on Audi’s Instagram shows an R8 in camouflage featuring a blocky pattern of red, black, and silver rectangles and also sports a small Audi-Sport-branded wing on the back. From the images, it seems like the R8 successor doesn’t look significantly different from the existing version of the supercar.
Audi has made no secret about retiring the R8 for the 2024 model year in the United States and even created the USD251,395 (approximately RM 1,175,150) Audi R8 GT which the brand limited to only 150 units for the US market. So will the R8 replacement be an electric vehicle (EV) or a hybrid?
While the future of the Audi R8 remains very uncertain and there are rumours about Audi developing an electric version of this car. Sadly, the new version of the R8 might have a completely different appearance but it might share a platform with the upcoming EV replacement of the Porsche 718 Boxster as well.
On top of that, unlike the previous generations of the Audi R8, Lamborghini plans to make the Huracan successor its own product with no relation to the Audi counterpart. The Italian brand, riding the wave of success from sales of the Urus SUV, now no longer has to share parts with the German automaker for the upcoming supercar.
We truly are at the end of an era and just like with everything else in life, when one door closes, another opens. In this case, the door closes on internal combustion engines (ICE) and the door opens on EVs, whether this is good or bad is for each of us to decide for ourselves but it is a new thing and new does not always mean good.
