Why Is Toyota Thailand Stopping The Sales Of VIOS

Toyota Motor Thailand takes the decision to cease sales of their Vios Fastback

Last week a Daihatsu (Owned by Toyota Motor Corporation so there are one big automotive group) leaked information that the crash tests for some of the ASEAN vehicles had been compromised.

Now, the issue is actually very small if you think about it, however, in todays automotive world where cars are sold better with high safety ratings and auto manufacturers take great pride in making sure their products get a 5 Star safety rating, this can be very damaging at showroom level.

So, this is what happened. On April 28th this year, Daihatsu and Toyota both confirmed wrongdoings in crash safety tests for DNGA-based vehicles that were recently launched.

What happened was “the inside lining of the front seat door was improperly modified, and that there was a violation of the side collision test procedures and methods stipulated by regulations.”

This was done on the Toyota Vios (cited as the Yaris Ativ, which its name used by Toyota Motor Thailand) and the all new Perodua Axia. Neither of these vehicles goes by the Daihatsu name, but the engineering work and the wrong-doing mentioned is on Daihatsu.

Below Is The Statement From Toyota Motor Thailand (TMT)

Following the announcement of temporary stoppage of sale and delivery in Thailand. In case the side collision test results are modified.

Toyota had previously announced that it had been retested internally and was tested in front of Japan’s certification body to be standard and did not need to modify any car.

The group of customers who bought ATIV previously could continue to use the car. However TMT needs to send the car for re-testing at Japan as per the witness testing schedule. So, it has to temporarily stop selling and handover the car.

All of these on 8 Feb this year. This is “Akio Toyota”, the chairman of the board of directors of Toyota Motor Corporation, prepares to fly to Thailand to set up a press conference on the progress of such cases.

It is expected that after everything is done correctly, the car will be back on sale and delivered as usual, and the information will be back on the website as usual.
