Proton starts 2023 on the right foot with excellent sales performance in Q1.
PROTON continues strong sales momentum into 2023 with impressive growth in the first quarter. For March, the company sold 14,573 units, a 3.8% increase from February and an 11.9% increase from the same month in 2022. This brings their total sales for Q1 to 40,287 units, an impressive 50.9% growth rate compared to the previous year.
PROTON’s market share for the month of March is estimated to be 18.7%, securing the second place in sales table rankings, while the estimated market share for the first quarter stands at 21.2%, making PROTON the biggest gainer in terms of market share. The car sales in March reached a new record high, estimated to stand at 78,000 units, breaking the previous record of 76,657 units set in December 2022.
PROTON’s popularity continues to rise with three of its models leading segment sales. The Proton Persona, with 2,421 units sold in March, has become the best-selling B-segment sedan for three consecutive months. The Proton X50, an SUV in the B-segment, is the best-selling SUV in Malaysia and sold 3,414 units in March. Meanwhile, the Proton Exora retained its standing as the best-selling C-segment MPV.
The Proton Saga remains the company’s best-seller, with 6,313 units sold in March and a total of 17,446 units sold in Q1. While the growth rate is masked by the floods that affected Saga production at the beginning of 2022, the increase in sales for Q1 stands at 84.6%.
PROTON’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Roslan Abdullah, acknowledges that the first quarter’s sales were inflated due to the rush to deliver cars for bookings made during the PENJANA incentive period. Despite this, PROTON remains confident in maintaining its sales momentum and plans to launch the Proton X90 soon.
Additionally, PROTON recently announced its commitment to expanding its future New Energy Vehicle (NEV) offerings, taking the brand into new market segments to fulfill its ten-year plan.
