It looks like a hybrid Porsche 911 GT2 RS is on the way and it is wild
So Porsche developed a monstrosity of a electric tech with the 919 Hybrid which won the Le Man 24 Hours in 2017 and the new 963 LMDh that is gunning for victory this year, and if rumours are to be believed, the German brand is planning to use this same tech to bring back the Porsche 911 GT2 RS in its wildest, most powerful form ever.
Since the GT2 RS has always been the wildest of the Porsche 911 cars, then this report makes sense however, it is worth noting that until we actually get concrete confirmation, then this is all just rumours but personally, I really hope it is true as that would truly be the 911 to end all 911s.
Moreover, this report was brought to light by Autocar and their full article is linked here. The short version however, is that Autocar confirmed through its anonymous sources that patents Porsche applied for in 2021 will most likely be used for the battery and cooling in the GT2 RS along with the 919 hybrid powertrain.
So when is the new Porsche 911 GT2 RS coming? Most likely in 2026 and it will feature an electrified powertrain capable of over 700hp (710PS) and will also most likely cost over USD300,000. Well, clearly, this sharp price hike is a natural side effect of the increased power so it is not surprising.
It is also worth pointing out that the new drivetrain in the new Porsche 911 GT2 RS will be a mild-hybrid rather than a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). This is in line with previous comments from Porsche CEO Oliver Blume, who said that when the 911 gained a hybrid model it, it would not be in the form of a PHEV.
On top of that, the reason that Porsche is avoiding making the new Porsche 911 GT2 RS a PHEV is most likely to keep weight down as a mild hybrid system allows the car to fit smaller batteries compared to a PHEV. The electric motor is also expected to be integrated into the transmission leading to a 39:61 front-to-rear weight ratio.
The same report from Autocar also claims that the new Porsche 911 GT2 RS will be rear-wheel-drive and will feature the iconic flat-six which in this new iteration is rumoured to make 746Nm of torque along with an additional 250Nm of torque from the electric motor.
The brand also stated that whether or not the new Porsche 911 GT2 RS will feature a manual gearbox is dependent on whether or not a manual transmission can actually handle all that power so could the next GT2 RS be the generation of GT2 RS to bring an end to the manual transmission?
So what do you guys think of the new Porsche 911 GT2 RS? I hope it really does come with over 700hp.
