The Mercedes-Maybach S580e has become the first ever electrified Maybach.
For over a century, Mercedes-Maybach has been the epitome of automotive luxury, style, and status. Since its inception by Wilhelm and Karl Maybach in 1921, the brand has continuously redefined itself to meet the ever-evolving expectations of the ultra-luxury segment.
Today, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is one of the most sought-after vehicles on the market, and the brand is set to take another leap forward with the introduction of its first-ever plug-in hybrid, the S580e with the same plug-in hybrid powertrain as the S580e Benz model.
According to Daniel Lescow, Head of Mercedes-Maybach at Mercedes-Benz Group AG, “With our first plug-in hybrid model, we are combining the luxury experience typical of Maybach with emission-free local driving when in electric driving mode.
The Mercedes-Maybach S580e represents a pivotal step in the transformation of our heritage brand into an electric future. We will present our first fully electric model as early as 2023.”
The S580e takes the already exceptional luxury of the Maybach brand and elevates it to new heights with its silent electric driving mode. The interior of the vehicle is already known for its quietness, but when in electric mode, it becomes even more serene, with the car gliding down the road with zero emissions.
Charging features have been integrated with Maybach’s signature style, such as the concealed charging socket on the left side of the vehicle and blue accents in the headlights, as well as a battery charging state display in the instrument panel.
Under the hood, the S580e packs a powerful punch, thanks to a highly efficient inline six-cylinder engine from the current Mercedes-Benz engine lineup. This engine combines 270 kW/367 hp of performance with low fuel consumption and emissions, and when paired with the electric motor, provides a combined system output of 375 kW/510 hp and maximum torque of 750 Nm. The electric motor’s immediate 440 Nm of torque is available from the first engine revolution, resulting in quick acceleration and dynamic handling. The S580e can reach 0-100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds.
For those who need to charge on the go, the S580e comes standard with an 11 kW charger for three-phase charging from AC mains, and for even faster charging, a 60 kW DC charger is available as an option. With this setup, you can go from a nearly depleted battery to a full charge in just 30 minutes.
It looks like even the ultra-rich cannot escape the wave of electrification that’s on the horizon. This is probably for the best.
Thanks to the plug-in hybrid powertrain of vehicles like the S580e, the richest of the rich can now cruise silently down the road in electric mode while being spared from the range anxiety induced by battery electric vehicles.
