A century since the quadrifoglio, or four-leaf clover, first graced an Alfa Romeo vehicle.
Alfa Romeo is commemorating 100 years of the iconic Quadrifoglio badge on its vehicles. The Quadrifoglio (four-leaf clover) was initially intended as a good luck charm during the 1923 Targa Florio, an Italian road race. The Quadrifoglio helped define Alfa Romeo’s racing heritage and has adorned its race cars and powerful road vehicles since then.
Alfa Romeo’s Corsa RL race car, which competed in the 1923 Targa Florio, sported the Quadrifoglio, which brought good fortune as Ugo Sivocci went on to win the race. This triumph marked Alfa Romeo’s racing heritage and turned the Quadrifoglio into the emblem for the team’s race cars.
The Quadrifoglio has adorned various Alfa Romeo models over the years, including the Sprint, 90, 33, 75, 164, 145, Spider, Mito, Giulietta (2010), and the latest models, Stelvio and Giulia Quadrifoglio.
The Giulia Quadrifoglio, powered by the Alfa Romeo 2.9-litre V6 bi-turbo engine producing 510hp and 600Nm of torque, completed a lap time of 7.32 at the Nurburgring Nordschleife, while the Stelvio Quadrifoglio completed the lap in 7.52, making them two of the most exciting and dynamic cars in their segments.
To celebrate 100 Years of Quadrifoglio, Alfa Romeo has revealed a new badge with a gold outline around the iconic four-leaf clover emblem, designed by the Centro Stile Alfa Romeo. Alfa Romeo is also celebrating the 60th anniversary of the creation of Alfa Romeo Autodelta, the brand’s legendary racing department.
The team was established as a separate entity under the management of Carlo Chiti in 1963, and some of the most notable Alfa Romeo racing cars came from the Autodelta division, including the Giulia Sprint GTA.
Autodelta cars won some of the most prestigious racing competitions globally, such as Le Mans, 1000km of Nurburgring, 500km of Imola, and 24 Hours of Daytona.
Alfa Romeo will celebrate both anniversaries with a series of events throughout the year, including two events at the Alfa Romeo Museum in Arese, Italy, on the 113th anniversary of the brand on 25 June 2023.
