Geely Haoyue L Launched In China From USD18,300

Could this finally be the next Proton X-SUV?

So the Geely Haoyue L just launched in China with a starting price from 127, 900 yuan to 147, 900 yuan or roughly USD18, 300 to USD21, 200. Let’s get the obvious bit out of the way first, this SUV is indeed based on the Geely Boyue and the new L model will have three trim levels to choose from all with a 2+3+2 layout.

All models will also come with a Drive-E series 2.0TD engine as standard. Now we have been speculating for sometime as to which new Geely model may be rebadged and introduced here in Malaysia as the hotly anticipated Proton X90 and we already have a good idea of which car that will be so where does the Haoyue L stand?

Moreover, the Geely Haoyue L adopts a new design language with a massive octagon shaped grille and a chrome strip connecting the two headlights so unless Proton have decided to completely overhaul the design of the X90 at the very last minute, which is unlikely, then this car is probably not getting rebadged as the X90.

On top of that, the rear of the Geely Haoyue L is also different from that of the Geely Haoyue and features a light bar that connects the two tail lights as well as a roof mounted spoiler and two exhaust pipes. It also features a different tail light design made up of 244 LEDs.

Furthermore, the Geely Haoyue L also comes with a few other cool extra features, such as luggage racks, a panoramic sunroof and chrome outlined window frames, that will more than likely have to be removed before rebadging to keep costs down so perhaps this car may be rebadged and sold as a luxurious special edition X90 in the future.

Additionally, the Geely Haoyue L is massive as it is a seven seater SUV and is a lot bigger than the Proton X70 measuring 4,860mm long, 1,910mm wide and 1,770mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,825mm. This makes it bigger even (slightly longer) than the standard Haoyue, so maybe rebadged as a X90 long wheelbase edition?

On the inside, the Geely Haoyue L is pretty much similar to the standard Haoyue save for a few colour options for the leather seats as well an updated centre console design with more advanced toys too. It does look extremely spacious based on the pictures too.

Powered by a Drive-E series 2.0TD, the Geely Haoyue L makes 160kW of power and 325Nm of torque and this engine is paired to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission which takes the car from 0 to 100km/h in 7.9 seconds. The engine is definitely more than capable but I fear it may struggle going uphill if all 7 seats are occupied.
