The 6th generation Nissan Serena has been launched in Japan.
The Nissan Serena has been a popular mid-sized SUV in Japan, Malaysia and many other markets for decades now. Today, the company announced an all-new 6th generation model, fully revamping the vehicle from the ground up. At its core, it remains a 3-row MPV that’s “Big, Easy, Fun”.
Two powertrain choices are available to Nissan Serena customers – a petrol engine with a continuously variable transmission and the second generation e-POWER system. The new e-POWER system uses a specially-developed 1.4L engine that serves as a generator.
Propulsion happens via electric motors. The new 1.4L generator motor is controlled by energy management technology that decides when to turn the engine on or off depending on vehicle speed, traffic conditions and other factors. With the engine turned off for longer, the cabin is quieter. The engine itself is designed to provide powerful and smooth acceleration.
Nissan’s latest Advanced Driver Assist System, ProPILOT 2.0, is fitted to the top-sped e-POWER equipped Serena. This allows hands-off driving in limited circumstances. All other grades get the more basic ProPILOT features as standard. The top spec model also comes with ProPILOT Park with memory and ProPILOT Remote Park.
In order to reduce motion sickness in the cabin, Nissan has designed the new Serena with a few science-based solutions. Here are the packaging approaches used:
- A wide, open view from inside the vehicle and an optimal display monitor positioning
- All-new seat design that dampens occupant movement
- A highly rigid steering wheel enhances handling stability
- A vehicle structure that deflects crosswinds and reduces shakiness at high speeds
- Tighter suspension on the e-POWER models
- e-Pedal Step, which allows the driver to control vehicle speed by just using the accelerator
Other highlights include full LED exterior lighting, the widest windshield in any minivan of its class, and 14 body colour choices (4 of which dual tone).
In the cabin, expect a switch-type gear selector, water repellant seat material, 120mm additional driver legroom (vs outgoing model), a multipurpose centre seat for the 8-seater variants, the return of the dual rear tailgate, handsfree auto-open side passenger door, storage for every seat, a intuitive touch panel for a/c controls for each zone, and an optional 100V AC external power source adapter for e-POWER models.
