Porsche Macan EV Launch Delayed To 2024

Porsche confirms this is due to slow software development

Well, it looks like the rumours were true, InsideEVs reports that the all new Porsche Macan EV that was slated to be released in 2023 has been pushed back to 2024. Apparently, Porsche confirms that this is due to slow development of Volkswagen’s CARIAD software platform. Their full article is linked here.

CARIAD was originally known as Car.Software and its purpose is to produce software for Volkswagen group vehicles. It would mainly focus on five key areas which are, connected car and device platform, intelligent body and cockpit, automated driving, vehicle motion and energy as well as digital business and mobility services.

On top of that, the new Porsche Macan EV was set to be one of the first models to be built on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) which was co-developed by both Audi and Porsche. Now that the car has been delayed, we may see a few other cars on this platform before it.

Anyway, Porsche was road testing the all new Macan EV and had initially planned to have this car roll off the production line and into the driveways of their customers in 2023. Now we have already talked about that (link here in case you missed it) but now the German brand has pushed back the release date to the following year.

Moreover, Porsche says this is because the Volkswagen Group CARIAD software development is behind in advanced software and this caused the planned deliveries of the new Macan EV to begin in 2024 instead. As to why that is anyone’s guess, perhaps the software is suffering a glitch? Or maybe some parts are not available yet.

Additionally, Porsche stated, “a risk remains that the Group will not achieve its existing cycle plan for new vehicles on schedule, in particular BEV models of the 718 and Cayenne.” This shows us that Porsche themselves are not willing to give its customers anything less than a perfectly functioning software system.

Whether or not that is a good thing is for you to decide. I am simply curious as to what new advancements Porsche has in store with this new Macan EV and I am also excited to see how this new advanced system will react in other Volkswagen group brands and what quality of life improvements it will bring with it.

To expand on that, the new software is being dubbed the E3 1.2 platform and Porsche has stated that one of the prerequisites for continuing development of the software is the “successful development” of the E3 1.2 platform first. So fingers crossed that Porsche can succeed with that sooner rather than later.

What do you guys think? Will 2024 be the year we finally get the new Porsche Macan EV? Will Porsche resort to relying on a third party software developer to speed up the process? Thank you Inside EVs for the information and images.
