An all-new Ford Mustang has broken the covers.
There’s little doubt that the 6th generation of the Ford Mustang was a successful one. This was the first Mustang to be engineered for the globe, which is why you see so many of them here in Malaysia too. It was also the first to be offered with a smaller 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine, which is made it even more accessible to a larger market.
This generation is unfortunately coming to the end of its lifecycle soon and an all-new 7th generation Mustang being shown today, continuing the formula of jet-inspired cockpit design with an all-new turbocharged 2.3L inline 4 and naturally-aspirated 5.0L Coyote V8 engine options. There’s a 10-speed conventional automatic or a 6-speed manual, which gets rev-matching on the Mustang GT model.
Changes include quicker steering, and an ‘electronic drift brake’, which combines an electronic parking brake with the appeal of a mechanical handle. The new Mustang gets a range of options, including a Performance Pack, active suspension, wider rear tyres and wheels, larger brakes, better cooling, Recaro seats and an active exhaust.
The new Mustang’s looks are based largely on cues set up in the outgoing generation. The 7th generation chisels these looks and emphasises the overall frontal width. The upper grille design has been influenced by the original 1960. New Tri-Bar LED headlamps are an easy way to tell this generation apart from the previous one. What’s more, each version of the Mustang gets its own unique front end, with the GT models getting larger and more aggressive grille openings. The roofline on this new Mustang has been designed to accommodate for a driver with their helmet on.
The convertible hood uses a one-touch activation system. The hood’s centre latch is designed for single-handed use and the fabric hood is fully lined and insulated. Even with the compact roof stowed away and fully independent suspension, the Mustang Convertible’s boot can still store 2 golf bags.
A new lineup of alloy wheels ranging from 17″ to 20″ are on offer. Ford is introducing 2 new colour options – Vapor Blue and Yellow Splash. There are also new stripe colours and designs as well as three Brembo brake calliper colours, Black, Red, and Grabber Blue.
There will also be new customisation options direct from the factory, including the ‘Bronze Design Series” appearance package, which adds Sinister Bronze alloy wheels with bronze badging.
Inside, the new Ford Mustang takes digitalisation to the next level with new animations and visuals, some of which are based on the Unreal Engine 3D creation tool. The instrument cluster is fully digital and their colours adapt to the drive mode selected.
The 12.4″ digital instrument cluster flows into a 13.2″ SYNC 4 infotainment touchscreen that’s angled toward the driver. Another highlight of the interior is the flat-bottomed steering wheel. The interior is highly customisable. Amenities include a wireless charging pad, overhead USB ports for track cameras and other devices, an optional B&O Sound System, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa Built-in.
