The Proton X70 gets the smaller but more efficient 1.5L three-cylinder engine from the X50.
The Proton X70 was the car that changed the fortunes of the company. They went from having no desirable cars to having a waiting list nearly about a year long at its peak. The X70 got its first major change in early 2020 with the introduction of the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission replacing the 6-speed automatic it first arrived with. There were also some minor changes made to the overall vehicle as it became more optimised to the local market. The all-wheel drive option was dropped when this happened.
Today, the Proton X70 gets yet another major update. It will now be powered primarily by the 1.5L TGDi three cylinder direct injection turbo petrol engine. The 1.8L is still available but only on the full-spec model, but even with that spec, the new 1.5L is still an option. What’s more, the all-wheel drive option has now been reintroduced but only with the 1.5L engine and Executive trim level.
The new X70 lineup looks like this:
- 1.5 TGDi Standard 2WD RM93,900
- 1.5 TGDi Executive 2WD RM105,500
- 1.5 TGDi Executive AWD RM111,300
- 1.5 TGDi Premium 2WD RM117,900
- 1.8 TGDi Premium 2WD RM121,800
These prices are for on the road without insurance and are subject to change after SST gets reimplemented on new car sales.
1.5L TGDi vs 1.8L TGDi comparison
The 1.5L is the same as found on the X50 Flagship spec and produces 177PS and 255Nm of torque. It’s not quite as powerful or torquey as the 1.8L, which posts an output of 184PS and 300Nm of torque. That being said, the new engine achieves its peak output earlier and there’s a reduction in fuel consumption of 7% .
Also, as mentioned it is available with an all-wheel drive system. Best of all, the road tax is noticeably cheaper.
Other Changes To The 2022 Proton X70
Besides that, there are a few other changes to the X70 including:
- ‘quartz black’ finishing on the front and rear bumpers
- new 19″ alloy wheels
- a foot sensor on the powered tailgate
- nappa leather seats
- black headlining
- Proton Intelligent Air Purification System system (N95 cabin filter + air purifier)
Here’s the press release with more.
