The Volkswagen ID.5 is the latest electric vehicle to be revealed and it’s an SUV coupé.
The Volkswagen ID electric brand has been expanded further this month by the addition of the ID.5 and ID.5 GTX. The ID.5 is an electric SUV coupé. They’ve reserved some features, styling cues and a dual motor setup for the more sporty, premium ID.5 GTX.
Amongst the differences are the aforementioned all-wheel drive/dual motor system, a large air inlet, IQ.Light LED matrix headlight with intelligent high beams and 3D LED rear lights as standard. Both variants of the ID.5 are otherwise quite similar and are built on the Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB). The differences in design makes the ID.5 GTX quite a bit shorter than the ID.5 (17mm) and the ID.5’s sole electric motor is mounted on the rear axle. The drag coefficient is also different between the two models (0.26 for the ID.5 and 0.27 for the ID.5 GTX).
On the software front, the ID.5 vehicles come with ID. software version 3.0 which improve charging performance and voice control amongst other updates. This third generation of software allows for over-the-air updates and the activation of additional functions. Travel Assist with swarm data allow for a more relaxed and predictive driving experience while optional Park Assist Plus with memory function allows for parking to be automated in certain situations. The Vehicle Dynamics Manager networks the drive and chassis control systems and the ID.5 also has an optional adaptive DCC chassis for optimal dynamics.
The digital cockpit features a driver display and a high-resolution multimedia system, an augemented reality heads-up display system, natural voice control and learning-enabled features from the Cloud. 30-colour ambient lighting is also an option on the ID.5. With Car2X communication Volkswagen ID.5 vehicles can communicate with other Volkswagen fleet and signals from infrastructure located within 800m of the vehicle to alert the driver of upcoming dangers.
There will be three engine options available for the ID.5, but they’ll all get a large, long-range battery to power them. Electrically actuated cooling air vents in the front of the vehicle ensure optimal air flow.
To help differentiate the ID.5 from the ID.4 family, Volkswagen have given if a number of unique design features, including a different bumper, painted door panelling and a unique roof line for an SUV coupé appearance. This new shape cuts into the headroom by 12mm compared to the ID.4. It has a luggage compartment volume of 549L.
Using the standard Mode 3 cable, the e-SUV coupé can also be charged with up to 11 kW of alternating current (AC), even when it is out and about. Charging performance can reach up to 135 kW as standard at a fast-charge station. These vehicles are made at Zwickau.
