Suzuka Auto Parts yard burns down next to DUKE.
Two days ago, netizens reported seeing a large column of fire rising against the KL skyline along the Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE). It was quickly learnt that there was a massive fire that had broken out at a half-cut and auto parts yard. The yard in question was Suzuka Autopart, one of the larger half-cut dealers in the area at 40ft X 100ft, located along Jalan Kampung Pasir, Taman Segambut. Over 90% of the yard was eventually engulfed in flames, destroying hundreds of thousands of ringgit worth of inventory, possibly even millions. The question is how did this happen?
The fire broke out around 5.40pm and Bomba got the call around 5.50pm on the 23rd of November 2021. It took 83 firemen from 8 stations around the Klang Valley to eventually contain the fire. Fortunately, no injuries or deaths were reported as a result of this incident. Fire & Rescue Departments from Jinjang, Sentul, Sri Hartamas, Hang Tuah, Titiwangsa, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Wangsa Maju, and Seputeh were dispatched to the scene. Also present were four FRT vehicles, four water tankers, ambulances and more. Firemen were split to tackle different sections of the blaze in order to contain it. It took several hours to contain the fire completely but by 9.30pm, the operation was over and the vehicles began to return to their stations.
It is unclear how much inventory was being housed at the Suzuka lot at the time, but the brand did carry parts for a host of car models and makes. We see parts for Toyota Alphards and Prius models and there are indications taht parts for Porsches, Bentleys and other Volkswagen Group brands were housed at the lot as well.
What’s going to happen to all that burnt inventory? Well, most likely a lot of the glass and metal parts will have to be sold as scrap metal wherever applicable. Anything plastic is probably going to be worth nothing. It looks like an entire warehouse floor of engines and transmissions were burnt to a crisp.
Our condolences to the business owners and those working at the yard. Hopefully their insurance is able to help them get back on their feet and take care of the damage.
