The Mazda CX-30 wins an impartial Consumer Reports Top Pick award.
The Mazda CX-30 is a bit of a niche product when compared to its larger, more affordable cousin, the Mazda CX-5. However, there seems to be a consensus that it’s a much more high-quality, premium experience. Earlier this month, Consumer Reports named the Mazda CX-30 as one of its 10 Top Picks of 2021.
Consumer Reports gave many Mazda models great ratings in 2021 based on reliability, owner satisfaction as well as their own performance rating. Other models that were named include: the Mazda3, Mazda6, Mazda MX-5, Mazda CX-3, Mazda CX-5 and Mazda CX-9. However, it was the CX-30 that won a slot in their 10 top picks for the year. Just about every other category was won by a Japanese make except for the electric car and midsize 3-row SUV categories, which went to the Tesla Model 3 and the Kia Telluride. No surprises there.
It should be noted that in the United States, the Mazda CX-30 comes with the option of a 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G Turbo engine, the same petrol motor we find on the full-spec Mazda CX-5 and fully-imported Mazda CX-9 in Malaysia.
For us, the Mazda CX-30’s 1.8-litre turbodiesel motor offered quite a compelling package. While it was still a rather compact package, we could not deny that the Hiroshima-based car company was able to deliver premium levels of refinement. Not only did the car look a lot more intricate than your average Japanese offering, it was also more dynamic, comfortable and quieter than the competition by miles. It was almost as if Mazda positioned it to go up against premium rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLA or the BMW X1.

Here are some highlights about the CX-30:
- The CX-30 is also available in Malaysia with a 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated petrol motor.
- The CX-30 is based on the latest generation architecture shared with the Mazda3
- The CX-30 is fully-imported from Japan
- The CX-30 was initially only available in front-wheel drive. In 2020, an AWD petrol model was introduced
