Kia Tease The EV6, The First EV On Their New Chassis

Kia have shown a few highlights of their upcoming EV6, built on a new platform using a new nomenclature.

The Kia brand is evolving drastically for the future of mobility. On top of a drastic rebranding, the company is also changing the way they name their vehicles. Their vehicles will adopt a simpler alphanumeric naming scheme.

The first battery-electric vehicle to be shown following the Kia rebranding exercise will be their EV6. Today they have teased the EV6 by releasing partial digital renders of the vehicle.

The silhouette indicates that vehicle will be a crossover with twin rear spoilers – one smaller spoiler lip integrated into the taillights and another larger roof spoiler.

The EV6 is built on the Electric-Global Modular Platform or E-GMP. E-GMP is a Hyundai Motor Group shared architecture that will underpin all future electric vehicles from all their sub-brands.

EV6: What’s in a name?

Kia is no stranger to the alphanumerical naming scheme. In many markets, their car models have sported names like ‘K5’ or ‘K7’. However, in other markets, like ours, they stick to conventional names like ‘Optima’ or ‘Cerato’. As of late, they’ve made a more conscious effort to move things towards a global alphanumerical system. The EV6 is an extension of the current nomenclature with ‘EV’ standing literally for Electric Vehicle and the number suffix being an indicator of the vehicle’s size and prestige within the portfolio. EV6 then is the company’s mid-ranged all electric offering.

PRESS RELEASE

Kia Corporation has revealed the first official images of the EV6 – its first dedicated battery electric vehicle (BEV) built on the company’s new EV platform (Electric-Global Modular Platform, or E-GMP).

EV6 is also the first of Kia’s next-generation BEVs to be developed under a new design philosophy that embodies Kia’s shifting focus towards electrification.

Kia’s new naming strategy for upcoming dedicated BEVs

As part of the company’s brand transition, Kia’s new dedicated battery electric vehicles will be named according to a new naming strategy. The new approach brings simplicity and consistency to Kia’s EV nomenclature across all global markets.

All of Kia’s new dedicated BEVs will start with the prefix ‘EV’ which makes it easy for consumers to understand which of Kia’s products are fully electric. This is followed by a number which corresponds to the car’s position in the line-up.

Designed and engineered to embody Kia’s new brand slogan, ‘Movement that inspires’, EV6 will make its world premiere during the first quarter of 2021.
