Would you mind an Indian-made Jimny being available here?
The 4th generation Suzuki Jimny is one of the most sought after little off-roaders today and it’s not difficult to see why. The thing has a retro appeal yet delivers on modern expectations with regards to refinement and fuel efficiency. The problem is the availability and price is a little absurd. In just about every market where the Jimny has been introduced, it very quickly gets sold out. Suzuki’s not a large automotive company and in many countries, including our own, they’re either under-represented or absent.
But there’s hope yet! Late last year, the company expanded production of their Jimny to their Maruti Suzuki Gurgaon Plant in India. They’ve replicated the same specification of the export model that’s built at the Kosai Plant in Japan too, so there shouldn’t be much of a difference to the end-user.
It still features a K15B 4-cylinder engine and has both a manual and automatic option available.
The Indian-made Jimny is destined for export markets in Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. These are mostly left-hand drive markets that they’re targeting, but India itself is a right-hand drive market. While not explicitly stated, it’s likely the factory there has the capability to build both variants. So we might just see a Made in India Jimny roll around our way if the Suzuki brand were to be revived locally.
Here’s the press release with more.
