Many Malaysians aren’t aware of this, but Hyundai split off ‘Genesis’ as its own premium marque back in late 2015, and the brand has been rather successful in the US and Korea. Back in July, dsf.my got an exclusive look at the GV80, the company’s first SUV. It was quite an impressive machine, sporting features that hadn’t arrived in the premium segment and a design that was up there with more exclusive luxury brands like Bentley.
Now, the company is gearing up for its 2nd luxury SUV launch, the GV70. They showed the vehicle off publicly in Korea, but it was covered up in a pretty unique camouflage pattern. The pattern has QR codes that observers can scan, should they spot it driving around on public roads there.
Just like the larger GV80, the GV70 has a large, shield-shaped grille and many other styling cues. Engine options have not been revealed, but expect the 2.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine from the Kia Stinger to be available as the base motor here.
We spoke to Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors yesterday, and they said they’d be willing to import certain Genesis models for customers, should they be serious about the purchase. If this GV70 or the larger GV80 interests you, send your inquiry to your nearest Hyundai showroom.
For contest, the GV70 goes up against the Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X3, Lexus NX, Volvo XC60 and Audi Q5.
Here’s the press release.
PRESS RELEASE
Today the brand new Genesis GV70 SUV is revealed publicly in Korea. The camouflaged vehicle shown in the accompanying teaser photos previews the brand’s second SUV, a dynamic midsize suv that joins the GV80 in a rapidly expanding model lineup.
The camouflaged GV70 will be tested on public roads in Korea for one month, beginning today. Observers who are fortunate to catch it in the wild can scan a QR code on the vehicle’s wrap to learn more about the camouflage pattern and G-matrix.
While specific details are presently hidden by the bespoke G-Matrix camouflage pattern, the continued evolution of Genesis’ signature “Athletic Elegance” design language is noticeable.
G-Matrix is inspired by the diffused reflection of light from precision cut diamonds and is a core part of the Genesis brand identity. Drivers can look forward to the creative application of the pattern on the GV70 in different ways, emphasizing the details that are emblematic of the Genesis brand.
