All the things you should know about this iconic British boutique sports car manufacturer.
Whenever Aston Martin is mentioned, most people will automatically have the James Bond theme tune cued up in their heads. Thanks to the silver screen, the fictional British secret agent on Her Majesty’s Secret Service will always be closely associated with this iconic British marque. There is however, much more to Aston Martin than just the preferred ride of 007.
Originally founded in 1913 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford, Aston Martin initially began life as a race car manufacturer. That said, the iconic continent-crushing luxury grand tourers we typically associate the brand with today only came to light under the stewardship of David Brown, which incidentally is what the DB designation stands for in the Aston Martin line-up.
Speaking of the DB series, several iconic Aston Martins have left a mark on automotive history. These range from the timeless classics like the DB5, DB6 and even various iterations of the DBS, to the quirkier ones like the wedge-shaped Lagonda sedan.
In fact, over its illustrious 107-year history, more than 85,000 cars bearing the Aston Martin name have graced the roads worldwide. An impressive feat for what is the only independent luxury car company currently in existence. What is perhaps even more impressive is that nearly 95 percent of them are still on the roads today.
Currently, four models make up the Aston Martin line-up. All of which are perfectly proportioned and thus, perfectly embody the brand’s purpose of ‘For The Love Of Beautiful’.
First off, there is the Vantage sports car. Affectionately known as The Hunter, it is a shark nosed predator that is razor sharp, and poised to strike at any time.
Then there is the DB11, which is often characterised as The Gentleman. It’s sleek, svelte body lines are much like the well-cut suit worn by a certain gentleman spy.
The DBS Superleggera meanwhile is a brute in a suit, brimming with assertive power. Power that is delivered in the form of a 725 PS, 5.2 litre twin-turbocharged V12.
Lastly then, there is the DBX SUV. Designated as The Adventurer, the latest addition to the line-up is also the most practical, though no less of an Aston Martin.
Aside from these regular offerings though, Aston Martin also dabbles in some more bespoke projects too. Dubbed ‘The Specials’, the most notable of these special projects will probably be the Zagato line-up of cars.
A long-standing collaboration with the Milanese coach builders Zagato, several Aston Martin models have received this exclusive coach built makeover, with the most recent ones being the Vanquish Zagato, Coupe, Volante, Speedster, Shooting Brake.
Aston Martin also currently operates a classic car department. Known as Aston Martin Works, this department within the automaker is probably most well-known for producing the DB4 Continuation line of Aston Martins. A 25 car limited run series of period-correct brand new classic race cars.
Most recently too, Aston Martin has also diversified to creating all-out track focused cars. The first of which arrived in 2015 in the form of the Aston Martin Vulcan, and the next ones being the upcoming Valkyrie and Valhalla. A pair of hybrid hypercars that was co-developed with the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 Team.
On the topic of Formula 1, Aston Martin too will be entering this most prestigious of motorsports next year as the Aston Martin Formula 1 Team. F1 is not the only motorsport outlet for the brand however as Aston Martin AMR has long been a dominant force in the World Endurance Championship. Securing multiple podium positions and class victories throughout the many years of participation in this series.
There is of course much more to this illustrious British icon of course, but this is just a taster of the company’s achievements to date. Much more than just the sleek ride for James Bond don’t you think?
