There is fast gaining popularity for older Japanese sports cars around the world and also here in Malaysia. Probably because they do not make them like before. Raw, powerful, involving and with bags of character.
Modern sports cars are filled with driver aids and lots of sound insulation to keep the driver less interested in driving and more interested with their smart phone.
One very rare Japanese performance machine is the early 1990’s Nissan Pulsar GTi-R. It is probably the most unassuming sports car in terms of design. In our books, this was probably a last minute after thought to get a Nissan car into the World Rally Championship (WRC) and after looking at their current lineup of cars, this humble family car looked like the best option and so the Pulsar GTI-R was born.
So, a powerful and response Nissan SR20DET engine was shoehorned into its compact engine bay and come clever engineering was employed to make sure it could withstand the rigorous dirt trails of the WRC course.
Its first race outing in 1991 saw it challenging the Mitsubishi EVO and the Subaru Impreza but it did not have the speed to challenge the two machines and so its was discontinued at the end of 1992.
This Nissan Pulsar in its basic family form was launched in 1990 as the fourth series and was codenamed the N14. In Japan, the N14 range offered eight different models with a total of eighteen available variations. This included options such as six engines to choose from, three body shapes, and two drivetrains. This Nissan Pulsar was a rather plain hatchback that was designed for economy use, as opposed being a rally ready vehicle. It was never introduced in Malaysia by Tan Chong (the Nissan brand guardian) but a handful of units turned up thanks to private importers.
The N14 Nissan Pulsar GTI-R three-door hatchback was a homologation variant produced between 1990 and 1994 in order to enter the WRC under Group A rules. Its turbocharged 2.0-liter SR20DET engine produced 227bhp and 284Nm of torque. The GTI-R body was distinguished by the large rear wing and a large bonnet scoop.
The interior is dominated by a pair of aftermarket Recaro bucket seats, complete with huge bolsters to hold you in place when the road ahead moves swiftly past you. A three-spoke Nismo steering wheel along with a Nismo gear shifter was included.
Underneath that simple body was an ATTESA all-wheel drive system. With a power-to-weight ratio of 0.083 and all wheel drive (AWD), a stock standard GTI-R is able to accelerate from 0–100km/h in about 5 seconds and cover the standing quarter mile in just 13 seconds.
From our research, there seems to be only three original road legal units of this car in Malaysia and here is on unit for sale right now and you should consider it if you are looking for a retro hot hatch. Today, the used asking price in Europe and America for this rare and unique hot hatch sits between USD12,000 to USD15,000 which is about RM50,000 to RM62,000. Here below is the asking price in Malaysia.
