Nissan Rogue Hybrid discontinued for 2020

Why is this information of any importance to you? Well, the Nissan Rogue is also known as the Nissan X-Trail in Malaysia and ASEAN. Nissan in North America recently issued a revised 2019 price list and in it the Rogue Hybrid’s pricing was missing. Online media in that part of the world contacted the Nissan marketing office and were informed that the hybrid system in the Rogue was to be upgraded to meet the need of customers for 2021.

The Advanced Rogue Hybrid System Explained

The 2019 Rogue Hybrid combines an advanced 2.0-liter 16-valve DOHC aluminum-alloy inline 4-cylinder engine and a compact lithium-ion battery with an innovative one-motor, two-clutch control. The system’s gasoline engine is rated at 141 horsepower and 144 lb-ft of torque, while the advanced 30 kW electric motor is rated at 40 horsepower and 118 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid system net power is 176 horsepower. The system also includes an Idle Start/Stop system and an Intelligent Regenerative Braking system.

At the core of the Rogue Hybrid gasoline-electric hybrid system is Nissan’s advanced Intelligent Dual Clutch Control system. The first of the two clutches is a dry clutch installed between the 4-cylinder engine and the electric motor, where the torque converter would normally be, and the second is between the motor and Xtronic transmission.

The high-output lithium-ion battery is able to charge/discharge quickly, which contributes to high-speed, precise control of the electric motor and optimum clutch control, and in combination enable smooth start and quick shift changes. An Intelligent Regenerative Braking system partially recharges the battery during vehicle braking and additional fuel economy is provided by an Idle Start/Stop system.

In addition, with use of the compact Lithium-ion battery located under the rear cargo area, the Rogue Hybrid maintains its flat rear floor for easy passenger access to the rear seat and little reduction of cargo room.

The Petrol Engine Still Leads

Buyers of the Rogue models in North America are drawn more to the current equipped, responsive 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine which is rated at 169 horsepower and 175 lb-ft or torque. The engine is matched with an advanced Xtronic transmission with standard Sport Mode and Eco switches. Fuel economy is rated at 26 mpg city, 33 mpg highway and 29 mpg combined for front-wheel drive models. Rogue AWD models are rated at 25 mpg city, 32 mpg highway and 27 mpg combined.

This is a similar engine to the one used in the Malaysian Nissan X-Trail 2.5L.

Cost vs Saving

Looking at the selling price of the Nissan X-Trail Hybrid vs the Nissan X-Trail 2.5L petrol we can see why the North Americans are shying away from the buying the hybrid. The same situation is probably happening in Malaysia where buyers do not see the savings in fuel over the 6-7 years of ownership against the higher asking price of the hybrid version.

This Is Why Subscription Makes Sense

The price difference of RM6,000 between the hybrid with 5 seats and the petrol with 7 seats moves Malaysian buyers away from the hybrid as our RON95 fuel is subsidies very well to prevent much yearly savings at the petrol pump.

This is why Edaran Tan Chong Motor is offering a subscription plan only for the hybrid X-Trail at just RM2,500 a month.

Like the subscription plan for the Nissan Leaf, the X-Trail Hybrid subscription route also needs two months of security deposit and the annual insurance for the RM159,888 car, which comes up to RM5,000 and RM4,500 respectively. Add in the first month’s RM2,500 subscription fee and your total upfront payment is just RM12,000 followed by monthly payments of just RM2,500.
