Starting in 2021, the rules for a new top-class race car series – Hypercars in the WEC race will be in place that will allow cars to be built for street and racing. Participation in this new category has already been confirmed by Toyota with the new GR Super Sport Concept and Aston Martin with their Valkyrie. Now we are informed that Koenigsegg will be joining them.
Christian von Koenigsegg (owner and designer), believes that his new Koenigsegg Jesko model has all the chances of success in racing.
“We would like to compete if there is such an opportunity, because for the first time there is a category that is oriented towards our type of car. To compete in the last ten years, after losing the GT1, against Porsche 911 and Ferrari 458 would have been crazy with a car that costs ten times more, stumbling in the quest to maintain a balance of performance. But now it is a sense and it is extremely interesting. We have a lot of companies who want to sponsor us if we want to race, so it should not cost us so much. Probably, if we do, we’ll work with a racing team instead of doing it all by ourselves.
“The first set of rules really excluded any possibility for us to go racing. So we put our efforts on “ice.” Newly announced new regulations look much more feasible at the surface, but we did not have time to fully evaluate them. The interest on our part persists, but for the moment we have no concrete announcement. “
