We put the Ranger Wildtrak in the Hands of a Contractor

The Ford Ranger Wildtrak 4X4 is one of the most desirable pick-up trucks in Malaysia. But what does your average Malaysian pick-up truck-owning contractor think of it? Well, we find out in this unscripted test drive.

This full-spec Wildtrak has 210hp and 500Nm of torque for you to play with. Yet because of its 10-speed gearbox and its low displacement, you get excellent fuel economy. Plus, it has an annual road tax of just RM438.40! That’s so much less than anything else it goes up against.

The Ford Ranger Wildtrak in Malaysia is available as a 4X2 (with the single turbo 2-litre) and 4X4 (tested here with the biturbo 2-litre engine). As of now, it is the only pick-up truck available with an automatic gearbox and 2-wheel drive. As most pick-up truck owners in the country don’t drive off road, we think more should take a look at this as a leaner, more cost-effective option.

The Ranger is now equipped with keyless entry and push-start button on the Wildtrak. Its interior hosts an array of upgrades to help tackle the working week, the long weekend road trip, and the off-road adventure.

SYNC® 3 on the Wildtrak is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and includes Bluetooth and an 8.0-inch full colour touchscreen. The Wildtrak is also equipped with in-built satellite navigation system for when the Ranger is beyond mobile coverage areas.

The new Ranger’s suspension had been upgraded for improved control roll, to enhance the driving experience when fully-laden and when towing.

The new packaging also enables geometry changes for an improved ride, a reduction in bodyroll as well as improved steering precision. The suspension changes do not impact on Ranger’s equal class-leading towing and payload capabilities.

In Malaysia, the Wildtrak is offered in Frozen White, Absolute Black, and this Saber orange.
