VW Corrado-Kombi, why were they ever built?

During the seven years of its production run (from 1988 to 1995) about 100,000 units of the classic VW Corrado sports coupe were built. But now we have discovered the existence of a VW Corrado Magnum Sportkombi, a sports wagon, a prototype, a needle in a haystack and a very rare find.

Discovered recently in the US, only two of these prototypes were ever produced and both are now available for sale. The two prototypes were ordered by Volkswagen from Marold Automobili GmbH. Initial plan was to produce 200 units for the European market. But then the project was abandoned by VW and Marold tried to sell the two prototypes that were built. However, the then asking price was probably too high and the cars disappeared from the market until now.
