In appreciation to the achievements recorded by the Malaysian Olympic contingent at the recent Rio Olympic Games, DRB-HICOM and PROTON Holdings Bhd presented eight cars to the nation’s heroes who succeeded in winning the medals for the country.
The event was graced by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Yang Berhormat Encik Khairy Jamaluddin, accompanied by Chef-de-Mission of the Malaysian Olympic contingent, Tan Sri Mohamed Al-Amin Abdul Majid. Also in attendance was Group Managing Director of DRB-HICOM and PROTON Chairman, Dato’ Sri Syed Faisal Albar.
A Proton Perdana was presented to Datuk Lee Chong Wei for his achievements as the most successful Malaysian Olympian in history with 3 silver medals. The first silver medal achievement was attained at the Beijing 2008 Olympics followed by the second silver medal at the London 2012 Olympics and the third silver medal at the recent Rio 2016 Olympics.
Other silver medallists, Pandelela Rinong and Cheong Jun Hoong (Women’s Synchronised 10m Platform diving), Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying (Badminton Mixed Doubles), and Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong (Badminton Men’s Doubles) were each presented with a Proton Suprima S 1.6L Turbo Premium.
Azizulhasni Awang, the first Malaysian cyclist to win a medal at the Olympics, who is also fondly known as “Azizul the Pocket Rocket,” received the all-new Proton Persona which was just launched last month, for his bronze achievement.

In appreciation of their sacrifices for the country, we are extremely honoured to present the national cars to our athletes to celebrate their achievements at the highest level such as the Olympics,” said Dato’ Sri Syed Faisal Albar, Group Managing Director of DRB-HICOM and Chairman of PROTON.
