Garth Tander has claimed a win in the Sandown 500 as Shane van Gisbergen stole the championship lead from Jamie Whincup in a dramatic start to the endurance season.
In a rain-marred race that created havoc for drivers on the slippery track, the Holden Racing Team driver claimed his first Supercars victory since Townsville in 2014 after holding off Red Bulls Van Gisbergen in a thrilling finish.
Holden’s Tander’s victory looked in doubt when the front left guard on his car came lose after it appeared to be struck by a piece of rubber as he raced down the straight on lap 122, but he was able to nurse the damaged car home for the rest of the race with the Red Bull car in hot pursuit.
