Alfa Romeo is back making statements that they are set to release their first ever SUV carrying the nameplate, Stelvio. The vehicle is set to make a debut later in the year and will be available for sale in 2017 but we have to wait and see.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne said that the name “Stelvio” pays homage to the famous Stelvio Pass in Italy. Marchionne revealed this during an investor presentation where he also released a new strategy for the firm. The automaker had planned to release 8 automobiles by 2018.
The automaker hopes to release the remaining 6 models by 2020. There is hardly any other information available about the Stelvio. However, we have combed all over and following is what we have managed to gather about this upcoming SUV.
Alfa Romeo Stelvio Exterior and Interior
We don’t know how the SUV will look like on the outside or the inside, we can only show you render and teaser images. However, we understand that the SUV will borrow much styling cues from its sedan sibling, the Giulia. The automaker says the model will feature the best abilities in its segment. The model will be capably equipped to handle different terrains. From what we know of Alfa Romeo, you can expect a stylish and attractive design.
On the inside, the model will need to have a very stylish and comfortable cabin to stand a chance against competitors such as the BMW X3. As such, expect sophisticated technologies, high quality upholstery, excellent design and a full package of driving aids. The Giulia sedan cabin is pretty impressive and I believe the SUV will adopt a host of the sedan features including its stylish dashboard layout.
Engine and performance
We have learned that the SUV will be based on the Giulia’s rear-wheel-drive platform. It will also be offered in both 2WD and AWD just like the sedan. Also, like the sedan, it will be offered with both 4- and 6-cylinder mills. The engines being fronted are a 2.2 L diesel engine capable of producing 150 horses.
Another likely engine is a 2.0 L petrol engine rated at 280 hp. The most potent engine being rumored is a twin-turbocharged 3.0 L engine which is expected to produce over 500 hp. Information on the transmission and other engine specs is not available as of this writing.
