Having been proven effective with its mountain bike helmets, Bell is now introducing Multi-Directional Impact Protection System (MIPS) to its motorcycle helmet range.
It is an important feature that will provide additional protection for the head. When a head rotates quickly and comes to a sudden stop, the rotational acceleration can cause the brain tissue to experience high levels of strain that can result in various types of brain injury.
MIPS uses a slip-plane system that rotates in the helmet to potentially slow or reduce the amount of energy transferred to or from the head. Science tells us that if we can reduce the strains associated with rotational acceleration, the risk and severity of brain injury might be reduced.
It is implemented alongside Bell’s Flex Impact Liner that has no less than three different materials that correspond to different type of forces.
The technology will be offered starting with two off-road helmets, MX-9 and MX-9 Adventure and one street helmet which is the Qualifier DLX.
